Iron Railing Systems

Iron railing systems are stair and balcony guards made of steel or wrought iron pickets, posts and handrails welded into one rigid assembly. Homeowners choose them for permanence, from Westchester colonial scrollwork to a flat-bar Brooklyn stoop rail. DKP has fabricated iron railings at its own Bay Shore shop since 2001 and installs them with its own crews across the five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and the Hamptons.

Iron suits colonial interiors in Nassau and Westchester, NYC row house stoops, Suffolk County exterior steps, and Hamptons terrace guards where wood would weather. For a lighter look on a modern staircase, compare a cable railing system.

Materials and options for iron railings

Most railings sold as wrought iron today are mild steel, so the look comes down to pattern and finish.

  • Baluster styles: square or round pickets, twisted bars, baskets, knuckles or scroll panels.
  • Handrail profiles: flat steel cap, round tube, or wood cap over an iron frame.
  • Finishes: iron railings are usually powder coated, most often in black or bronze, and exterior rails are typically hot-dip galvanized first so salt air never reaches bare steel.

An iron rail can meet a glass railing, and the same shop builds the custom staircase beneath it.

Design and code considerations

Under the Residential Code of New York State, a stair handrail typically sits 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosing, guards are typically at least 36 inches, and baluster spacing must stop a 4 inch sphere. Inside the five boroughs the NYC Building Code applies instead: guards are generally 42 inches, with lower allowances for one- and two-family homes and within individual apartments, so a Brooklyn stoop and a Nassau colonial are measured to different rules. Thin pickets meet them without bulk. On a curved staircase, including a curved monorail staircase, the rail is rolled to the stringer radius before welding.

How DKP builds and installs iron railings

A laser scan and 3D design render let you approve the baluster pattern and rail profile before cutting. Fabrication and finishing happen in the Bay Shore shop, and DKP’s own crews anchor the assembly on site, often completing projects within two weeks. Frequently asked questions

Will an exterior iron railing rust?

Bare steel will, which is why exterior rails are galvanized and powder coated. After that, an occasional rinse is the only maintenance.

Can you match an existing wrought iron railing?

Yes. DKP fabricates to drawings, so a new section can copy the original pattern, spacing and rail profile.

How much does an iron railing cost?

Pricing depends on linear footage, baluster pattern, finish and interior or exterior use. DKP measures the space with a laser scan and provides a free quote.

Do iron railings need a permit in NYC or on Long Island?

Often, especially for exterior guards and stoops. DKP is licensed and insured in Suffolk County, Westchester County, Southampton, Shelter Island and the Town and Village of East Hampton, and is a member of the Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association.

OUR CLIENTS REVIEWS

Absolutely unbelievable experience with DKP. We had old attic stairs as our main stairs and we had Arthr and his team come in and start from scratch. Everyone on the DKP team was punctual, professional, worked cleanly, thoughtful about my family who were here at the time of construction, good communication, I could go on and on. The best part was that they were affordable and everyone was so kind and accommodating. Their work is exceptional, you will not find this craftsmanship anywhere else. Do not think twice about going to someone else. I’ve attached before and after photos, and the photos alone speak for themselves. I wish I had more stairs to do because I’d call them back in a second.

DKP Wood Railings and Stairs is a phenomenal company! Absolutely the best choice if you are located in Nassau County. We created a new design, creating curvature in the bottom flight of stairs that is elegant and welcoming. Termed “Manor” stairs these craftsmen milled a perfectly complementary railing as seen in the attached photos. They listen carefully to their customer’s preferences and have a very efficient work ethic sticking to schedules and budgets. We had an excellent experience with them from beginning to end.
