Custom Staircases

A custom staircase is designed for one opening, floor-to-floor height and interior, not assembled from stock parts. Homeowners, architects and builders choose one when the stair is a focal point or a standard flight will not fit. DKP Wood Railings and Stairs has built them for Long Island and NYC homes since 2001 from its own Bay Shore shop.

Pre-war houses in Brooklyn and Queens often have steep, narrow stairs that a custom replacement can straighten in the same opening. New builds in Nassau and Suffolk County often call for an open two-story foyer stair with glass or iron railings. Materials and options for a custom staircase

Hardwood treads and stringers in species such as white oak, walnut or ash, stained or clear-coated to match existing floors.
Steel structure with wood or stone treads, as in floating and monorail staircases.
Railings in glass, wrought iron, stainless cable or turned wood.
Layouts that are straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, curved or spiral, including modern staircases.

Design considerations

Under the Residential Code of New York State (and the matching NYC Building Code provisions inside the five boroughs), risers are limited to 8 1/4 inches and treads must be at least 9 inches deep, which is why a tight footprint often needs a winder. Handrails typically sit 34 to 38 inches above the tread nosings. Guards on the open sides of the flight are typically at least 34 inches above the tread nosings (36 inches at landings and balconies), with openings sized so a 4 3/8-inch sphere cannot pass on the stair and a 4-inch sphere cannot pass at landings.

How DKP designs, builds and installs a custom staircase

It starts with a call or a visit to the Bay Shore showroom, followed by a site measurement. DKP scans the opening and produces a 3D rendering so you approve proportions, materials and railing details before cutting. Fabrication happens in DKP’s own Long Island facility and its own crews handle stair and railing installation, so one team is accountable throughout. The company holds home-improvement licenses in Suffolk County, Westchester County, Southampton, Shelter Island and the Town and Village of East Hampton, carries insurance, and is an SMA (Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association) member.
