Floating Staircases
A floating staircase has treads that appear to project straight out of the wall, with no visible stringer, riser or post. Homeowners and architects choose it to let light through an entry. DKP Stairs designs, fabricates and installs floating staircases from its shop and showroom at 1971 Union Blvd in Bay Shore, NY, and has built stairs for Long Island and NYC homes since 2001.
Floating stairs suit double-height foyers in Nassau and Suffolk new builds, gut renovations in Brooklyn brownstones and Manhattan duplexes, and Hamptons and Westchester homes with glazing behind the stair. They fit modern staircase layouts or a custom staircase.
Materials and options for floating stairs
The structure is hidden, usually a steel stringer inside the wall or brackets bolted to the framing, so only the treads and railing show.
- Treads: thick solid hardwood such as white oak or walnut; ask about glass tread options.
- Railings: a frameless glass railing keeps the open side clear, a cable railing suits a coastal look, and a slim iron railing adds contrast.
Design considerations before you commit
A floating stair sends its whole load into one wall, which needs solid framing, masonry or added steel. Under the New York Residential Code, open risers are typically limited so a 4 inch sphere cannot pass through where the stair sits more than 30 inches above the floor, handrails typically sit 34 to 38 inches above the nosing, and open-side guards typically at least 36 inches high. New York City projects follow the NYC Building Code, which sets similar limits for one and two family homes. Without a full wall, a monorail staircase is the alternative.
How DKP designs, builds and installs floating stairs
DKP laser scans the stairwell with Leica Geosystems equipment and produces a 3D render so you approve tread profile, railing and finish before fabrication. The steel and treads are built in Bay Shore and installed by DKP’s own crews, who also handle the railing installation, “often completing projects within two weeks.” DKP is licensed and insured in Suffolk County, Westchester County, Southampton, Shelter Island and the Town and Village of East Hampton, and belongs to the Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association. Frequently asked questions
Can a floating staircase be added to an existing house?
Usually yes, if the supporting wall can be opened and reinforced. DKP offers a free quote after the consultation, then laser scans the stairwell before fabrication begins.
Are floating stairs safe for children?
They can be, when riser gaps stay within code limits and the open side has a guard and graspable handrail. Glass railing does this without hiding the treads.
Should I choose wood or glass treads?
Wood treads are warmer underfoot and match hardwood floors; glass treads give the most transparent stair. Wood, glass, iron and cable railing samples can be seen in person at the Bay Shore showroom.
How long does a floating staircase take?
Timing is confirmed after the consultation and 3D render. In-house fabrication in Bay Shore keeps the schedule in DKP’s hands.
