Cable Railing Systems

A cable railing system replaces balusters or glass panels with horizontal runs of tensioned stainless steel cable between posts, so a stair, deck or balcony keeps its view. Homeowners choose it for a modern guard that nearly disappears. DKP Stairs has built railings for Long Island and NYC since 2001, and every cable system is fabricated in our own Bay Shore shop.

Cable railing is most often specified for waterfront decks on the South Shore, rooftop terraces in Brooklyn and Queens, and open-plan interiors where a floating staircase or monorail staircase would be weighed down by solid balusters. It also lightens a modern staircase without replacing the treads; for full transparency, compare our glass railing systems.

Materials and options

For oceanfront or poolside work in Suffolk County and the Hamptons, marine-grade 316 stainless cable resists salt air far better than standard 304. Posts and top rails are matched to the house:

  • Stainless or powder-coated steel posts for decks and rooftops, a natural match for our iron railing systems
  • Solid oak, walnut or maple posts and handrails for interior stairs
  • Surface-mount or fascia-mount bases with hidden or exposed tensioners

Design considerations

Under the New York State Residential Code, guards at decks, balconies and landings must be at least 36 inches tall, while guards on the open sides of stairs must be at least 34 inches measured from the tread nosings (34 to 38 inches where the guard top doubles as the handrail). No opening may pass a 4-inch sphere, or a 4 3/8-inch sphere on the stair-tread side. Because cable deflects when leaned on, cables are typically run about 3 inches on center with posts no more than roughly 4 feet apart so the gaps stay compliant under load.

Projects in the five boroughs fall under the NYC Building Code instead, where guards at rooftops and terraces are generally 42 inches; we confirm the applicable height before fabrication.

How DKP designs, builds and installs cable railing

After a consultation and free quote, our 3D stair design and render service shows post placement, cable count and handrail profile before anything is cut. Fabrication happens in our Bay Shore facility, and our own installation teams tension and inspect each cable on site, often completing projects within two weeks. DKP is licensed and insured in Suffolk County, Westchester County, Southampton, Shelter Island and the Town and Village of East Hampton. See finished work in our portfolio and railing installation pages.

Frequently asked questions

Will cable railing sag over time?

Properly tensioned cable on correctly sized posts holds for years. Cable relaxes slightly in its first season as the strands seat, which is why cable systems use adjustable tensioners that can be re-snugged with a wrench, typically once or twice in the first year.

Is cable railing safe for a home with small children?

Yes, when built to code. Cables about 3 inches apart on closely set posts will not pass a 4-inch sphere, and families concerned about climbing can choose vertical cable or a wider top rail.

Can you add cable to my existing deck or staircase?

In most cases, yes. We inspect the framing first because end posts must anchor into solid structure, and any reinforcement is spelled out in your quote.

Does the system change between interior and exterior?

The hardware is similar, but the materials differ. Exterior work near salt water gets 316 stainless, while interior stairs can use 304 with wood or steel posts. We confirm the right grade during your consultation.

OUR CLIENTS REVIEWS

Absolutely unbelievable experience with DKP. We had old attic stairs as our main stairs and we had Arthr and his team come in and start from scratch. Everyone on the DKP team was punctual, professional, worked cleanly, thoughtful about my family who were here at the time of construction, good communication, I could go on and on. The best part was that they were affordable and everyone was so kind and accommodating. Their work is exceptional, you will not find this craftsmanship anywhere else. Do not think twice about going to someone else. I’ve attached before and after photos, and the photos alone speak for themselves. I wish I had more stairs to do because I’d call them back in a second.

DKP Wood Railings and Stairs is a phenomenal company! Absolutely the best choice if you are located in Nassau County. We created a new design, creating curvature in the bottom flight of stairs that is elegant and welcoming. Termed “Manor” stairs these craftsmen milled a perfectly complementary railing as seen in the attached photos. They listen carefully to their customer’s preferences and have a very efficient work ethic sticking to schedules and budgets. We had an excellent experience with them from beginning to end.
