Glass Railing Systems

A glass railing system replaces balusters or cable with panels of tempered or laminated safety glass, so a stair, landing or balcony edge reads as one transparent plane. Homeowners choose it when they want daylight to carry through a stair hall. DKP designs, fabricates and installs glass railing stairs from its own shop in Bay Shore, NY, and has built railings for Long Island and NYC homes since 2001.

Glass suits narrow Brooklyn and Manhattan townhouse stairs. On Long Island and in the Hamptons it is the usual choice for second-floor decks and pool-facing balconies that need an exterior-rated system and an open water view, and it pairs well with an iron railing or cable railing elsewhere.

Glass railing materials and mounting options

Every panel is safety glazing, which residential codes typically require for glass in a guard. Laminated tempered glass holds together if a lite breaks. Thickness typically runs from 3/8 inch on post-supported systems to 1/2 inch on frameless base-shoe installations.

  • Frameless base shoe: panels set into a floor channel with no posts, the cleanest match for floating staircases.
  • Post-mounted: stainless or powder-coated steel posts with clamps, often capped in wood on modern staircases.

Design details on a glass stair railing

Each panel is cut as a parallelogram to follow the stair pitch and measured after the treads are set. Handrail height on a residential stair is typically 34 to 38 inches above the nosings, and open landings need a guard of at least 36 inches under the New York State Residential Code, and 42 inches where the NYC Building Code applies. A graspable handrail is still required with a frameless panel, so a frameless run is typically paired with a wall-mounted handrail or a slim stainless cap rail. On a monorail or curved custom staircase, the glass is planned in shorter segments.

How DKP builds and installs glass railing systems

A project starts with Leica laser scanning, then a 3D render so you approve the design before fabrication. Base shoe, posts and rails are fabricated in the Bay Shore facility, and DKP’s own railing installation crews set and plumb every panel, “often completing projects within two weeks.” DKP is licensed and insured in Suffolk County, Westchester County, Southampton, Shelter Island and East Hampton, is a member of the Stairbuilders and Manufacturers Association, and shows recent stair and railing work in its portfolio.

Frequently asked questions

Is a glass railing safe on a staircase with children?

Yes. The panels are safety glazing anchored to resist lateral load, and there are no gaps wide enough to pass a 4-inch sphere.

Can a glass railing be installed outdoors on a Long Island deck?

Yes, with stainless or marine-grade aluminum hardware and an exterior-rated base shoe. Hardware for waterfront and pool-side installs should be specified for salt air, typically 316 stainless.

How is a glass railing maintained?

Panels are cleaned with ordinary glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth. Stainless hardware gets wiped down a few times a year.

How much does a glass railing system cost?

Pricing depends on linear footage, glass thickness, mounting type and whether a top rail is included. DKP offers a free quote once you share the stair type, materials and design preferences, and confirms dimensions with laser measurement before fabrication.

OUR CLIENTS REVIEWS

Absolutely unbelievable experience with DKP. We had old attic stairs as our main stairs and we had Arthr and his team come in and start from scratch. Everyone on the DKP team was punctual, professional, worked cleanly, thoughtful about my family who were here at the time of construction, good communication, I could go on and on. The best part was that they were affordable and everyone was so kind and accommodating. Their work is exceptional, you will not find this craftsmanship anywhere else. Do not think twice about going to someone else. I’ve attached before and after photos, and the photos alone speak for themselves. I wish I had more stairs to do because I’d call them back in a second.

DKP Wood Railings and Stairs is a phenomenal company! Absolutely the best choice if you are located in Nassau County. We created a new design, creating curvature in the bottom flight of stairs that is elegant and welcoming. Termed “Manor” stairs these craftsmen milled a perfectly complementary railing as seen in the attached photos. They listen carefully to their customer’s preferences and have a very efficient work ethic sticking to schedules and budgets. We had an excellent experience with them from beginning to end.
